We Hosted a Mandala Art Workshop at Aamra Seniors Club, Gurgaon – Here's What Happened

There is a particular kind of silence that settles over a room when everyone is fully absorbed in something. Not the silence of boredom — but the deeper silence of people so present in the moment that they have forgotten to worry about anything else.

We experienced that silence at Aamra Seniors Club in Gurgaon. And it stayed with us long after we packed up and left.

This is the story of what we brought, what we discovered, and what 15 members of Aamra — some of them in their 90s — taught us about creativity, calm, and connection.

About Aamra Seniors Club, Gurgaon

Aamra is a seniors community in Gurgaon that brings older adults together for activities, physiotherapy, and meaningful engagement. Like the best of these spaces, it is built on a simple belief: that life after 60, 70, 80, or 90 should be full and purposeful — not quiet and small.

When we reached out about hosting a Mandala Art session, the team at Aamra was immediately on board. They had been looking for creative activities that were genuinely accessible to all members — something that could be done seated, required no prior experience, and had real depth to it rather than just filling time. Mandala art, they felt, could be all of those things.

They were right.

The Moment the Room Changed

The 15 members who joined ranged in age across several decades, including participants well into their 90s — which, honestly, we had not anticipated. We had brought enough kits for everyone, but we were quietly wondering whether the activity might feel too fiddly or demanding for the oldest members of the group.Within the first few minutes, every single person at the table had a paintbrush in hand and was bent over their mandala with an expression of total focus. We started with the mandala portrait boards from the kit — pre-engraved patterns that are easy to follow, with no pressure to draw or plan. All anyone had to decide was: which section, which colour, how light or how bold.

That single decision turned out to be endlessly absorbing.

People held paint pots up next to each other, comparing shades. Some worked outward from the centre. Others started at the outer ring and moved inward. One member, well into his 90s, was painting the smallest sections of his mandala with a steadiness and precision that was quietly extraordinary. In the background, favourites from the 60s and 70s played softly — and the room felt, all at once, soothing and alive.

Soothing. Relaxing. Creative. These were the words that came up again and again, unprompted, as people looked up from their work.

Why Mandala Art Works So Well for Older Adults

The Aamra session gave us the clearest picture yet of why mandala art resonates with older adults in a way that many other activities simply do not.

No experience required — and no fear of failure

Many older adults carry a belief, formed somewhere in childhood or school, that they are not artistic. This belief is persistent — and deeply unhelpful. Mandala art on a pre-engraved surface removes the barrier entirely. There is no blank page. There is no drawing involved. There is only colour, and everyone can choose colour. Within minutes, every member of the group had moved past any initial hesitation and was working with quiet confidence.

The structure is calming, not constraining

The circular, symmetrical form of a mandala is part of what makes it meditative. Unlike free drawing, which can feel overwhelming or directionless, the mandala offers a gentle framework: fill this section, then the next, then the next. That sense of knowing what comes next — without being told — is deeply settling. It asks just enough of the mind to keep it present, without demanding more than anyone can give.

It is genuinely accessible at every age

This was perhaps the most striking thing we witnessed at Aamra: the activity was equally engaging and equally achievable for every person in the room, regardless of age. The oldest participants painted with the same absorption and the same quiet satisfaction as the youngest. No modifications were needed, no simplified version for anyone. The kit, as designed, worked for everyone.

If an activity works for someone in their 90s, it works for everyone. That is a high bar. The Kalavio Mandala Kit cleared it.

It creates something permanent and beautiful

At the end of the session, each member had a finished mandala — painted in their own colour choices, reflecting their own aesthetic sensibility. These are not throwaway crafts. A completed mandala portrait is a real object that can sit on a coffee table or on a shelf as a small daily reminder: I made this.

That sense of authorship and completion is deeply meaningful, particularly for people who may feel that their years of making and doing and producing are behind them.

They are not.

What We Are Taking Forward

The Aamra workshop confirmed something we have been thinking about for a while at Kalavio: our kits are for everyone — not just children.

The same mandala kit that a 7-year-old uses on a Sunday afternoon is the kit that a 90-year-old used at a seniors club in Gurgaon that morning. Both experiences are equally valid, equally valuable, and equally real.

If you have an older parent, grandparent, or family member who might enjoy a mandala session — alone or together with you — the Kalavio Glow in the Dark Mandala Kit includes everything they need. No preparation, no prior experience, no blank page to face. Just colour, calm, and something beautiful at the end of it.
